Facts on File Online Databases User Friendly Instructions April 20, 2010 Prepared by: Kerry Erickson Rutgers Library Intern 1 How to Access Facts on File • Go to Newton Public School’s web page: http://www.newtonnj.org/education/di strict/district.php?sectionid=1 • From Newton Public School’s web page, click on Newton High • Next click on Library/Information Center • In the maroon box, click on the first choice, Online Databases • Then choose the second item listed, Facts on File Online Databases 2 What is Facts on File? • Consists of 12 reference databases that include: – American History Online – American Women’s History Online – African-American History Online – American Indian History Online – Modern World History Online – Ancient and Medieval History Online 3 What is Facts on File? • Consists of 12 reference databases that include (continued): – World Atlas – Science Online – Health Reference Center – Bloom’s Literary Reference Online – Ferguson’s Career Guidance Center – Curriculum Resource Center 4 Browsing Capabilities • Within each of the Facts on File databases, you can browse by: – Biographies – Events and topics – Primary sources – Timelines – Images and videos – Maps and charts 5 Learning Centers • Includes hand-picked entries on people, events and topics, primary sources, along with images, maps and graphs, and chronologies. • Provides links to comprehensive overview essays. • Linked entries provide a broad, inclusive look at an era or subject. 6 Searching Capabilities • In addition to basic searching, Facts on File can: – Perform advanced search – Limit results – Keep track of search history – Search from one to six other history databases at the same time including: • • • • • • American History Online American Women’s History Online American Indian History Online African-American History Online Modern World History Online Ancient and Medieval History Online 7 Areas of Special Interest • Editor’s Selection of the Month – Focuses on particular event in world history – Provides links to related events and topics, primary sources, and videos • Focus on … – Spotlights a specific subject area with links to more relevant information 8 Sample Search Results Search term •Here’s a sample search using the term “uss new jersey”with the database American History Online. 9 How Can I Print? • In order to print your information, click on the print icon indicated by the arrow. 10 Help Section • Provides a list of frequently asked questions to explain specific aspects of these databases. 11 Need More Help?
