WWII
• Causes & Fighting
Hitler causes controversy
• In Germany Hitler’s army had grown to
550,000 troops.
– This was a direct violation of the Treaty of
Versailles
• Hitler did not think Europe would use force to
uphold the Treaty, so he sent troops into The
Rhineland
Hitler cont’d
• Appeasement- giving someone what they
want to avoid war/violence
– Europe gave in to everything Hitler wanted b/c
they could not afford to fight a war with him
• Stuff Hitler took over
– The Rhineland- 1936
– Austria-1938
– Czechoslovakia- 1938
– Poland- 1939 *Took by military conquest
Hitler and the Russians
• Hitler and all other European countries knew
the only country large enough to stop
Germany was Russia.
• Hitler negotiated with Stalin and they signed
the Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact on
August 23, 1939
• With Russia out of the picture Hitler started
WWII on September 1, 1939 by attacking
Poland.
WWII Fighting
• Blitzkrieg– Germany took over Poland in less than one
month.
• Using this fast attacking military tactic
Germany took over Denmark and Finland in
less than a month too.
• On May 10, 1940 Germany began their attack
on The Netherlands, Belgium and France
Battle of Britain
• In August of 1940 Germany began to attack
Britain.
– They were attacking anything that would aid Britain’s
military
• The German Luftweaffe (Air Force) vs. The Royal
Air Force (RAF)
• Germany destroyed many buildings and drove fear
into British civilians
• G.B. fought back very hard and was successful in
holding off the German attack.
Hitler & the Russians (again)
• On June 22, 1942 Hitler broke his pact with Russia
and invaded.
– Hitler believed he would defeat Stalin and the
Russians before the winter hit in 1941
• Hitler’s troops made it to within 25 miles of
Moscow
• There was a huge battle at Stalingrad but
Germany never made it any further.
• Now in December of 1941 The German armies
had been stopped on both Fronts (France and
Russia
European Theater
• Germany had a new surge of successful
attacks in early 1942.
• He took all of northern Africa (from Morocco
to Egypt)
• One of the biggest mistakes made was for
Hitler to attack Russia.
– After he began to attack his army was defeated
and it changed his “goals” for the war.
Japanese Expansion 1930-1942
Japan
• Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan signed the
Anti-Comintern Pact on November 25, 1936
– Japan had not lost a war since before the 1500’s
• Japan attacked Pearl Harbor (The U.S. Pacific
Fleet) on December 7, 1941
– This pulled the U.S. into WWII.
– Germany also declared war on the U.S. on
December 11, 1941
Pacific Theater
• The Japanese Empire had grown to stretch
from inner China to the Island of Midway.
• The US stopped the Japanese at the Coral
Seato protect Australia.
• One Month Later we defeated the Japanese at
Midway and this became the turning point of
the war.
• A new strategy was developed to push the
Japanese army back to Japan- Island hopping
D-Day
• On June 6, 1944 The Allies launched the
largest attack in History at Normandy, France.
– This attack was a major turning point in the War
against Germany
• There were high casualties because of barbed
wire and metal obstacles covering the
beaches.
• The Allies were successful and eventually
pushed back the Germans all the way to Berlin
