WP3-N5 H. Lueck M.Punturo ILIAS-GW Annual meeting, London October 26-27, 2006 1 The original mission • WP3: An European Strategy for Future Antennas – Plan the enhancement of the performances of the European gravitational wave detectors and to organise their collective operation. – Objectives: • To determine scientific objectives that could be attained through short term improvements, optimisation and association of detectors now available in Europe. • To establish the bases for integrating existing and future gravitational wave detectors in a coherent network. • To draft a plan for a European network of gravitational wave detectors at the 2010 horizon ILIAS-GW Annual meeting, London October 26-27, 2006 2 Evolution of the activity • During the last year of activity the international scenario is evolved and this affected the WP3 activity: – Reduction of the number of projects based on the resonant masses technology – Incremental upgrades of the current interferometric detectors – Global vision of the network of interferometric GW detectors ILIAS-GW Annual meeting, London October 26-27, 2006 3 Reduction of the number of projects based on resonant masses • Canceling of the SFERA project by INFN • Support of the Dual project through an R&D activity limited only to Italian labs • Is it still possible to talk of a “networking” mission of the WP3 in this field? – Still items are shared with the other groups, but, obviously, the activity has been oriented preferably toward the ITF future ILIAS-GW Annual meeting, London October 26-27, 2006 4 Incremental upgrade of the ITF detectors • GW interferometer defined an incremental upgrade strategy – Virgo Virgo+ Advanced Virgo – GEO600 GEO HF – LIGO Enhanced LIGO Advanced LIGO • Technical contents of these evolutions have been discussed in the WP3 meetings – High power laser and related optics – Thermal noise in the suspended masses – New optical schemes ILIAS-GW Annual meeting, London October 26-27, 2006 5 …incremental upgrade of the ITF detectors • WP3 supported the realization of the documents describing part of these upgrades – Deliverables of the WP3 – Members of the GEO600 collaboration contributed and are contributing to the advanced Virgo Design • Advanced Virgo white paper • Guidelines for the Advanced Virgo R&Ds • Nevertheless, the upgrade of each European experiment is still a “private” business of the original groups – G.Losurdo & J.Hough talks about advVirgo & AdvLIGO – A fully integrated effort is needed for a future 3rd generation European detector ILIAS-GW Annual meeting, London October 26-27, 2006 6 FP7: the last train! • The Framework Programme 7 (FP7) is the most important possibility that European groups, working in GW experimental research, have to joint together with a real common target. • WP3 worked with the aim to catch this possibility – 3rd generation technology have been discussed • Cryogenic systems to reduce the thermal noise – “Natural” link with STREGA • Coating-less optics • Squeezed states ILIAS-GW Annual meeting, London October 26-27, 2006 7 …FP7: the last train! • WP3 supported also the “political” discussion – Meetings have been dedicated to the discussion of “what we must do in the FP7” scenario • H.Lueck will give a dedicated talk – Some difficulties: • Still friction against a real integration of the groups working in this field • huge working load caused by the current detectors commissioning activity • Global view, involving also our American colleagues has been just started ILIAS-GW Annual meeting, London October 26-27, 2006 8 WP3 team(s) • The WP3 team is growing and having a variable composition, depending on the subject under discussion • Official team: – H.Lueck, M.Punturo • K.Strain , R.Flaminio, V.Fafone, M.Bonaldi, A. de Waard, B. Mours, G.Losurdo, A. Vicere, P.Hello • Many important contributors: • J.Hough, S.Rowan, G.Cagnoli, A.Fraise, A.Giazotto, F.Vetrano, ….. • The dimension of the team is demonstrated by huge participation to the WP3 meetings ILIAS-GW Annual meeting, London October 26-27, 2006 9 2006 Meetings • Three meetings in the last year: – Frascati, 12-13 January • INFN national laboratories • http://www.ego-gw.it/ILIAS-GW/N5WP3Frascati06.html • Presentation of the Virgo+ and Advanced Virgo projects – Thermal noise and High power laser working grouos • Full day dedicated to the resonant detectors evolution ILIAS-GW Annual meeting, London October 26-27, 2006 10 Frascati Meeting ILIAS-GW Annual meeting, London October 26-27, 2006 11 … 2006 meetings • Florence, 27-28 April – http://www.ego-gw.it/ILIAS-GW/N5-WP3-WP2-Florence.html – Organized in parallel and in collaboration with the WP2 • Astrophysical issues MUST drive the development of the future detectors – 3rd generation technologies • Cryogenics, Topologies, … – Full day (WP2+WP3) dedicated to • Scientific case for a 3rd generation detector • Possible sensitivities • (Animated) discussion on what to do in the FP7 scenario ILIAS-GW Annual meeting, London October 26-27, 2006 12 Florence Meeting ILIAS-GW Annual meeting, London October 26-27, 2006 13 … 2006 meetings • EGO site, 6-7 October – http://wwwcascina.virgo.infn.it/collmeetings/DMwebpages/LIGO-Virgo-TNM/index.html – Subject of the discussion has been the Thermal noise in future detectors • 2nd and 3rd generation – First meeting investigating the “Global” view with our LIGO colleagues (thanks to the EGO support) • Still too early for the USA side to discuss about what next advanced LIGO – In any case, also in the FP7 framework, we must take care of what is progressing in the rest of the world (without waiting their decisions!) ILIAS-GW Annual meeting, London October 26-27, 2006 14 Conclusions • The first conclusion is that the “real work” is starting now! – FP7 is approaching – The right place where to find an agreement between all the European groups is WP3 – WP3 should promote the realization of the new Design Study – ….
