Canada’s Landform Regions
The Canadian Shield
•
•
•
•
The largest landform region in Canada
Half of Canada is covered by Shield
The world’s oldest rocks are part of the Shield
It is mostly flat with rounded hills of rock
• The rock type is igneous and metamorphic
• There are many minerals in the shield
• It is known as the “Storehouse” of Canada’s
minerals
• Mining is a major economic activity
• The Shield was formed by magma rising to the
surface
• Glaciers also helped
to shape the land
• The removed soil,
clay, rock and gravel
• This helped to form
thousands of lakes
and rivers
Appalachian Mountains
• The oldest highland
region in Canada
• They are rounded
mountain tops
• Millions of years ago
they looked like the
Rocky Mountains
• They are made of
sedimentary rock
• Glaciers also helped
to shape the land in
the Appalachians
• They formed valleys
between the
mountains
• Activities like skiing
are very popular
Innuitian Mountains
• The icy watch towers
of Canada’s north
• They are made up of
igneous and
metamorphic rock
• There are no trees
because it is too cold
for them to grow
• Very few people live
in this landform
region
• It is found from
Baffin Island to Alert
Western Cordillera
•
•
•
•
Very tall and ragged mountains
They are young in geologic time
Plate tectonics formed them
They are made of sedimentary rock
• They act like a giant
wall of rock
• There are an obstacle
to transportation
• There are very few
passes or gaps for
roads through the
mountains
• Glaciers in the
mountains helped to
form valleys and lakes
• The Western Cordillera is not the same the
Rocky Mountains.
• The Western Cordillera is made up of:
The Rocky Mountains
The Columbia Mountains
The Interior Plateau
The Coast Mountains
