Challenges
• Biophysical
– The resource base
– Crop and animal productivity
– Technology
– Climate
• Social, market and institutional
The CSA project
• One possible solution
– Sustainable increases in agriculture productivity
– Adapt agriculture (increases resilience) to climate
change
– Reduces/removes greenhouse gases from the
atmosphere
• In line with the government policy
Objectives
• Identify communities’ vulnerabilities and response to
CC
• Identify biophysical, social and economic constraints
• Develop crop and livestock systems in line with the
concept of CSA
• Assess how trees be integrated into the system
• Disseminate technologies
• Build capacity
• Gender issues in CSA
Activities
• Research
• Extension
• Capacity building
– Procurement
– Training
Expected results
• Effect of CC at micro level elucidated and communities’
responses ascertained
• Core crop and livestock production systems and their role in
CSA will be described and documented
• Ecologically compatible and economically profitable crop and
livestock system will be developed
• Promising land use and/or agroforestry systems in CSA
systems identified.
• Policy implications will be drawn and policy briefs will be
presented to decision makers.
• Gender equity in teaching, research and education promoted.
Expected results cont.
• Packages of climate smart agriculture prepared, piloted and
scaled up.
• The teaching, research and outreach capacity of participating
institutions improved.
• Graduate studies in climate smart agriculture will be launched
at Hawassa University.
• At least 30 scientific papers will be published in peer reviewed
journals and proceedings.
