A. Pre 1900’s
•
Doctors lacked the basic science to properly diagnose
and treat illness.
•
It was believed that illness was caused by the
misdistribution of ‘humors’ in the body and the
congestion of various organs.

Treatment included any or all ways to remove excessive
fluid…bleed, suck out lymph, induce vomiting, etc.

B. Early 1900’s
• Doctors recognized their skills in diagnosis and
prognosis, but inability to provide effective
treatment
• Subsequently, Therapeutic Nihilism’ -therapy by
nothing- became prevalent.
• Doctors were expected to provide information
and support.

sick, all measures [that] are required, avoiding those twin
traps of overtreatment and therapeutic nihilism."
