Order of Operations Created by Cristina Salas Leal November 17, 2007 Objective The students will learn to solve problems that include more than one operation. TEKS (6.2E) The student is expected to use order of operations to simplify whole number expressions (without exponents) in problem solving situations. Math Journal Take a few moments and write down the question and answer. Why do we have order of operations in math? What is the order of operations? Order of Operations This is the process used to solve mathematical expressions with more than one operation. Step 1 – Do all operations in parentheses FIRST. Step 2 – Multiply & Divide from left to right Step 3 – Add & Subtract from left to right. What is an expression? An expression is a mathematical sentence that has numbers and operations but no equal sign. Example 24 + 10 – 2 x 8 What is an Equation? An equation is a mathematical sentence that contains, numbers, operations and an equal sign. Example 18 + 11 x 5 = 73 Solve Which operation do you do first, subtraction or multiplication? Multiplication Then subtract Solve Do what's in the parentheses FIRST Do multiplication before subtraction Internet Websites Solve the expressions and guess the mystery picture Click here - Mystery Picture Play Operation Order Start with the Easy level Create the correct expression Click here – Funbrain.com's Operation Order Game Internet Websites cont’d See how many expressions you can solve in 120 seconds.
