Student Objectives
I can subtract integers.
 I can use subtraction of integers in real
life situations.

Vocabulary
opposite – is the number that is the
same distance from zero but in the
opposite direction. 4 and –4 are
opposites.
 additive inverse – the sum of a number
and its additive inverse is 0

Subtracting Integers
ADD
THE OPPOSITE
LEAVE-CHANGEOPPOSITE
Now Use Adding Rules
Positive + Positive = Positive
 Negative + Negative = Negative (add
the numbers, give the answer a
negative sign.)
 Negative + Positive or Positive +
Negative – Subtract the numbers, give
the answer the sign of the larger
number.

Absolute Value
Is the distance from zero only, does not
include direction
 ALWAYS POSITIVE
 Show me examples…

Examples
Example 1
4-(-7)
= 4+ 7
= 11
Example 2
-23 – (-2)
= -23 + 2
= -21
Example 3
-48 – 22
= -48 + -22
= -70
Example 4
-13 – (-12)
= -13 + 12
= -1
Examples
Example 5
Evaluate 12-a-b for
a=9 and b=-6
12 – 9 – (-6)
=12 + -9 + 6
=3+6
=9
Example 6
Evaluate c – a for a=9
and c=-2
-2 – 9
= -2 + -9
= -11
