OUTSIDE monkeys do – the

Steps in Dividing Decimals
1. Make the divisor (outside number) a whole number by
moving (swingin’) the decimal to the right as many places
as it takes to make it a WHOLE NUMBER.
2. In MONKEY TERMS: Whatever the outside monkey does
(how many places it swings) the inside monkey does also.
Then the monkey takes the decimal in the dividend (inside
number) and climbs up and sits on the roof!

Now the inside monkey does the same! Swing the decimal
point in the dividend the same number of places as the
divisor.

When the monkeys are done swinging they get tired and rest on
their roof bringing along the decimal.
The decimal point in the dividend lines up in the quotient
(on the roof).

4. Now, divide as usual!

4. Divide the numbers. Make sure the decimal point stays
lined up.

Remember

The more neatly you write and keep the
numbers lined up, the BETTER!
If there is no decimal on the outside the
monkey inside doesn’t move it just swings up
and sits on the roof.
