to widen and deepen scientific findings - to promote the application of science - to increase the scope of research - to educate top experts Long-term objectives (1995 National Development Programme): - to increase the application of knowledge to achieve Slovenia’s economic, social, cultural and environmental development - to develop a solid core of researchers (5000 or 0.25% of the population, of whom at least 3000 full-time employees with the rank of assistant professors; 10,000 experts or 2% of all employees to be employed in the development sector) - long-term provision in all basic scientific disciplines Basic research objectives (1995 NDP) - continuous implementation of the project for the education of top researchers - stable funding for the purchase and maintenance of research equipment and information infrastructure - improved membership of the resarch sphere in international networks - integration of the evaluation system at universities and in the science sector into the demanding international system and the one with open tenders - more research activities in public and state sectors - promotion and increase of the flow of researchers from the academic sector to user organisations - increased influence of the research sphere in determining the society’s development strategy -
