Modeling Addition of Integers
 To add integers, you can use counters
or a number line to model integers.
Using Counters






Color counters represent integers.
Red Counters=negative number
Yellow Counters=positive number
Positive 4=
Negative 3=
How do you think we would model
zero?
ZERO
 Zero is a special number.
 You would use one red & one yellow.
 This is called a zero pair!
 Opposites cancel out—a red and a
yellow erase each other!

Using a number line
 You can use a number line to model
the addition of integers.
 You start at zero facing the positive
direction.
 You move forward for a positive
integer.
 You move backward for a negative
integer.
Example
 Find 3 + (-2) using a number line.
Start at zero. Face the positive
direction. Move forward 3 units for 3.
Then move backward 2 units for -2.
You stop at 1.
