Action
verbs express
physical or mental action.
Examples:

run, jump, think
Transitive Verbs
 An
action verb that expresses a
direct action toward a person, place
or thing.
Example:
Laila entertained the child.
Action Verbs and Direct
Objects
 A direct object is a noun or
pronoun that follows an action
verb. The direct object receives
the action.
Example:
 Laila
entertained the child.
 In this sentence child is the direct
object because it receives the action.
Intransitive Verbs

A verb
that does not pass on action
to a receiver or an object. It simply
expresses an action or tells
something about the subject.
 Example:
 Katrina
studies hard.
Linking Verbs
 Express
a state of being and
connects the subject of a
sentence with a word in the
predicate.
 Examples:
 is,
am, are, was, may, be, has, appear,
seem
Helping Verbs
Helps
the main verb express
an action or state of being.
 Examples:
can speak
will learn
Helping verb+ Main verb= Verb Phrase
