What is a Direct Object Pronoun?
A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a
noun. Pronouns can be in one of three cases:
Subject, Object, or Possessive
Direct Object Pronoun is the direct recipient of
the action of a verb
DIRECT OBJECTS
I invite the boys. Whom do I invite? The boys.
He reads the book. What does he read? The book.
Invito I ragazzi. Whom do I invite? I ragazzi
Lui legge il libro. What does he read? il libro
The nouns boys and books are direct objects.
They answer the question what? or whom?
DIRECT PRONOUNS (him, her, them)
Answers the question WHO?
Chiamo il signore
Lo chiamo
Chiamo i ragazzi
Li chiamo
Chiamo la ragazza
La chiamo

Direct Object (it)
Answers the question WHAT?

1)
DIRECT OBJECTS GO RIGHT BEFORE THE VERB EVEN IN THE
NEGATIVE FORM
Vedo la ragazza. Non la Vedo.
2) The Pronouns Lo and La drop the final before a word
beginning with a vowel sound.
Ascolti la radio?, No, non l’ascolto
Inviti Maria?, Sì, l’invito
But NOT in the plural:
Inviti Anna e Maria? Sì, Le invito

In the passato prossimo verbs conjugated with
avere must agree in gender and number. This
happens only when you use direct objects in
the sentence.
