Formal Commands
When you address one OR several
people in a formal manner, you use the
formal command form.
•
•The
verb takes the -en ending that would
normally be used in the “Sie/sie” form.
•The
pronoun “Sie” or “sie” is always placed
immediately after the verb.
Formal Commands cont…
•
zum Beispiel:
Take the book! Nehmen Sie das Buch!
Buy it!
Kaufen Sie es!
Read it!
Lesen Sie!
Familiar Command: Du
The “du” command is used when you are
on a familiar basis with someone.
•
•The
-st ending is removed from the
conjugated verb in the “du” form, which
leaves the stem of the verb.
•“Du”
is not used in the command; only the
verb itself is used.
Familiar Command: Du, cont…
•
zum Beispiel:
Take the book!
Come!
Go!
Drink!
Buy it!
Nimm das Buch!
Komm!
Geh!
Trink!
Kauf es!
Familiar Command: Du, cont…
Side Notes:
• Verbs that end in a -t or -d, or a consonant
cluster like -fn, retain the additional “e” that
was added to help in pronunciation.
zum Beispiel:
Answer!
Speak!
Open!
Antworte!
Rede!
Öffne!
Familiar Command: Du, cont…
Side Notes:
• Stem Changing Verbs: Verbs that have a
vowel change from ei or ie retain this
change in the command form.
zum Beispiel:
Eat!
Iss!
Give!
Gib!
Look!
Sieh!
Familiar Command: Du, cont…
Side Notes:
• Stem Changing Verbs: Verbs whose stem
vowel changes from aä do not keep the
change in the command form!
zum Beispiel:
Drive!
Fahr!
Run!
Lauf!
Familiar Command: Ihr
When you address several people with
whom you are on a “du” basis, you will use
the “ihr” command.
•
•The
“ihr” command follows the exact same
form as the “ihr” conjugation, but leaves off
the personal pronoun.
•This
is the easiest form of the commands!
Familiar Command: Ihr, cont…
•
zum Beispiel:
Study!
Learnt!
Answer! Antwortet!
Buy it!
Kauft es!
English Commands beginning
with “Let’s…”
•Similar
to the “Sie” command. The
conjugated verb is used and the personal
pronoun, “wir”, immediately follows the
verb.
•Zum Beispiel:
Let’s speak German!
Sprechen wir Deutsch!
Let’s go home!
Gehen wir nach Hause!
Command forms of SEIN
The command forms of “sein” are slightly
irregular. The “Sie” and “wir” forms are
different than you would expect. The
command forms of “be!” are:
-Formal: Seien Sie!
-Du: Sei!
-Ihr: Seid!
-Wir: Seien wir!

forms (Sie, ihr, du, wir).
