Why Religious People should
promote racial harmony.
Lesson Objectives: To understand the reasons
why Religious people should support Racial
Harmony
 All students will understand at least three
reasons why religious people should promote
racial harmony.
 Most students will be able to expand on this and
make distinctions between Muslim and Christian
Belief.
 A few will take this further and will be able to give
more examples and explain them in detail.
Christian
• The teachings of the bible against racism.
• The teachings of the Church against racism.
• The example of Jesus
The Good Samaritan
• Jesus showed that races who hated each other
should love each others as neighbours.
Jesus treated people of different races
equally.
St Peter
• St Peter had a vision from God telling him not
to discriminate because God had no favourites
amongst races.
St Paul
• He taught that all races are equal in Christ
since God created all races in his image.
As St Paul says in his letter to the Ephesians
(chapter 2 Verses 14-17):
"For Christ himself has brought us peace by
making Jews and Gentiles one people. With his
own body he broke down the wall that separated
them and kept them enemies … By means of the
cross he united both races into one body …. So
Christ came and preached the good news of peace
to all…"
Church (With a capital C!!)
• The Christian Church has members of every
race.
• 70% of Christians are non-white.
Church again…….
• All Christian Churches have made statements
recently condemning any form of racism.
Muslim
• Islam teaches that it is wrong to be racist by
the teachings of the Qur’an
• The example of Prophet Muhammad.
Qur’an
• The Qur’an teaches that God created the
whole of humanity from one pair of humans,
so all races are related and none can be
regarded as superior.
Muhammad
• In his final sermon Muhammad said that every
Muslim is a brother to every other Muslim.
Ummah
• Islam teaches that all Muslims belong to one
brotherhood whatever your race.
Islam
• Islam is against any form of racism and Muslim
leaders and Mosques work with groups in the
UK to promote racial harmony.
