Parts of Speech
Noun A word that names a person, place, thing, or quality.
Example: Dog. The dog chased the cat down the street.
Example: Honesty. Honesty is one of the greatest virtues.
A proper noun is a noun that is a name.
Example: Bob. Bob is my friend.
Example: Bellerose Drive. I drove down Bellerose Drive to get to school.
Proper nouns always need to be capitalized.
Verb A word that expresses action, being, or state of being.
There are two types of verbs: action and helping.
Action verbs express action
Example: Ran. The dog ran down the street.
Helping verbs “help” the action.
Example: Is. The dog is running down the street.

Adjective An adjective is a word that modifies (describes) a noun or
pronoun.
Adjectives usually tell “what kind”, “which one”, or “how many”.
The articles “a”, “an”, and “the”, are always adjectives.
Example: Fat. The fat cat ate a big dinner.
-What kind of cat was it? Fat.
Example: These. I ate these oranges.
-Which one? These.
A proper adjective have the same purpose as a proper noun. These also need to be
capitalized.
Adverb An adverb is a word that adds meaning (describes) a verb by
answering the questions “how”, “when”, or “where”.
Example: quickly. The boy quickly ran down the street.
How did the boy run? Quickly.
Words ending in “ly” are usually adverbs.
