Earthquakes are violent movements of the
earth due to the movement of the tectonic
plates under the earth’s surface. This
movement is referred to as: plate
tectonics.
At one point, when plates underneath
the earth’s surfaced crashed together,
New Zealand and its volcanoes were
formed.

Sheep Farming
One of New Zealand’s biggest exports is
the wool and meat from sheep.
Ring of Fire
The Ring of Fire is a direct result and
consequence of plate tectonics and the
movement and collisions of crustal plates.
The Pacific Ring of Fire is an area of frequent
earthquakes and volcanic eruptions encircling
the basin of the Pacific Ocean. The Ring of Fire
has 452 volcanoes and is home to over 75% of
the world's active and dormant volcanoes.

Maori
(New Zealand’s natives)
Like the Aborigines of
Australia, the Maori are
believed to have come
from Southeast Asia
about 30,000 years ago.
Where in New Zealand do the
Maori live?
Most Maori live in the north island of New
Zealand. When the British invaded New
Zealand, around the same time they invaded
Australia, the Maori fared better than the
Aborigines. They were fighters who stood up for
themselves. This gained them more respect
from the British. Most lived along the coast at
the time and have since modernized along with
the rest of the coastal region of New Zealand.
However, much of their tradition remains
sacred.
