Recap
• Rocks are weathered by the elements, plants
and animals
• The broken down rocks are moved by wind
and water erosion.
• These sediments settle and over time
become cemented together to form

Metamorphic Processes
• Examine the slices of bread
• Describe them clearly (are they different?
How are they different?)
• Stack the bread alternating types.
• Wrap in greaseproof paper.
• Stack a pile of books on top for a few
minutes.
• This is a model. What do you think happens
in the Earth’s crust?
• Remove the books.
• Examine the bread. How has it changed?
• Place the stack of bread in a microwave for
30-60 seconds.
• What process in the Earth does this
represent?
• Examine the bread now.
• Write a description of the Metamorphic
Bread.
• Start heating a large beaker of water.
(Remember your skills at setting up Bunsen
burners and tripods on heat proof mats.)
• From now on this equipment is hot. Do Not
Touch.
More Metamorphic Processes
• Collect a dozen Smarties. No you can’t eat
them we’re in a laboratory.
• Crush them in a bowl or pestle
• Add a few marshmallows.
• Place the Smarties in a steel can and place
the can in the beaker of boiling water
• Caution: Hot
• Use a paddle pop stick to squash the
Smarties together as they are heated.
• After about 5 minutes remove the
Metamorphosed Smarties – Careful Hot
• Place in an ice bath
• When cooled take out the Smartie rock
examine and record
Metamorphic Processes
• Heat and Pressure Change rock.
• Often creates Rock that is very uniform or
contains large crystals.
• Metamorphic processes are often involved
in the concentration of valuable minerals.
