Metamorphic Rocks Recap • Rocks are weathered by the elements, plants and animals • The broken down rocks are moved by wind and water erosion. • These sediments settle and over time become cemented together to form Sedimentary Rocks Metamorphic Processes • Examine the slices of bread • Describe them clearly (are they different? How are they different?) • Stack the bread alternating types. • Wrap in greaseproof paper. • Stack a pile of books on top for a few minutes. • This is a model. What do you think happens in the Earth’s crust? • Remove the books. • Examine the bread. How has it changed? • Place the stack of bread in a microwave for 30-60 seconds. • What process in the Earth does this represent? • Examine the bread now. • Write a description of the Metamorphic Bread. • Start heating a large beaker of water. (Remember your skills at setting up Bunsen burners and tripods on heat proof mats.) • From now on this equipment is hot. Do Not Touch. More Metamorphic Processes • Collect a dozen Smarties. No you can’t eat them we’re in a laboratory. • Crush them in a bowl or pestle • Add a few marshmallows. • Place the Smarties in a steel can and place the can in the beaker of boiling water • Caution: Hot • Use a paddle pop stick to squash the Smarties together as they are heated. • After about 5 minutes remove the Metamorphosed Smarties – Careful Hot • Place in an ice bath • When cooled take out the Smartie rock examine and record Metamorphic Processes • Heat and Pressure Change rock. • Often creates Rock that is very uniform or contains large crystals. • Metamorphic processes are often involved in the concentration of valuable minerals.
