Earthquakes: Location and Causes of Earthquakes Title: Location and Causes of Earthquakes Date: 23/05/2017 Lesson Aims: To find out the location of earthquakes around the world. To find out what causes earthquakes to occur. Lesson starter: Location of the worlds earthquakes. On the next slide you will see a map of the world. Discuss with each other where you think you get earthquake activity and where you get no earthquakes. Be ready to come up to the board and mark on your answers. Interactive plate tectonic map. http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcseb itesize/geography/natural_hazards/t ectonic_plates_rev2.shtml This map shows the plate boundaries of the Earth. All earthquake and volcanic eruptions happen along these boundaries. What causes earthquakes? The different sections of plates are constantly moving due to convection caused by the heat of the Earth’s core. When the plate move they cause earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis. When the plates collide massive amounts of pressure build up. When the strain becomes too much the pressure is released and this causes the Earth to shake. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7533950.stm Plate movement animations http://earthguide.ucsd.edu/eoc/teachers/t_tecto nics/t_tectonics.html http://www.classzone.com/books/earth_science/ terc/content/visualizations/es0804/es0804page0 1.cfm?chapter_no=08 http://www.learner.org/interactives/dynamiceart h/plate.html
