“NO SWIMMING” ADVISORY LIFTED TODAY FOR LAKE
CORNELIUS FOLLOWING DISCHARGE OF SEWAGE
Charlotte, NC – ADVISORY LIFTED: The No-Swimming Advisory issued 6/19/2015 for portions of
Lake Cornelius (see image) has been lifted. Water samples collected by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm
Water Services staff reveal that bacteria counts are within safe limits; therefore, the swimming advisory
has been lifted.
The advisory had been issued after a blockage in a Charlotte Water sewer line caused an estimated 500
gallons of sewage to discharge into the lake at 787 Peninsula Drive in Davidson, N.C. on June 19, 2015.
Charlotte Water immediately removed the blockage and the discharged stopped..
Rusty Rozzelle, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services’ Water Quality Program Manager, said the
advisories are standard procedure. "It was necessary to close the areas to recreation because of the
potential risk to human health. That’s because Lake Cornelius is designated as recreational waters,” said
Rozzelle.
