Abstract
Introduction: Streptococcus pneumoniae continues being the bacteria that causes the biggest number of community acquired
infections. At the present, Streptococcus pneumoniae strains can be resistant to multiple drugs, being the prevalence of resistant
pneumococcus to Penicillin very high in developed and developing countries. Some of them can also be resistant to third
generation cephalosporines. Objectives: To know the prevalence of resistant pneumococcus to Penicillin and third generation
cephalosporines which are responsible for invasive illnesses in Hospital de Niños “J M de los Ríos”. Results: 17,86% of
Pneumococcus are resistant to Penicillin by Kirby-Bauer Method. Conclusion: 40% of the strains sent to Instituto Nacional de
Higiene were resistant to Penicillin by Inhibitory Concentration Method, but none of them were resistant to third generation
cephalosporines.
