NOTE TO PROJECT ARCHITECT: this section is only to be specified as
required by the oar.
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.01
SUMMARY
A.
Provisions of Division 01 apply to this section.
B.
Section Includes: Furnishing and installing theatrical lighting equipment and
luminaries to achieve a complete operating lighting and control system as specified,
and as indicated on Drawings for small stages/platforms in multi-purpose rooms. The
system shall include the following:

SUBMITTALS

MOUNTING REQUIREMENTS
A.
Comply with State of California zone 4 seismic requirements for mounting and
hanging equipment.

QUALITY ASSURANCE
A.
All equipment, components, and light fixtures shall be listed by Under Writer's
Laboratories (UL).
B.
Provide labor, engineering, design, testing, supervision, material and equipment
required.
C.
Equipment shall be new and high quality. To set a uniform standard of quality,
manufacturer of dimming system shall also be manufacturer of electronic dimmers.
Manufacturer shall have been continuously manufacturing dimming systems for at
least 15 years.
D.
Dimmer cabinet and components shall be manufactured by Leviton. Equivalent
products manufactured by Electronic Theaters Controls, Inc. and Strand Lighting Inc.
are acceptable. Contractor shall submit product documentation to the Architect of
Record for review and approval.
E.
Arrange and pay for dimming equipment manufacturer to provide start-up and
commissioning period assistance. A qualified engineering representative, employed
full-time by the system equipment manufacturer, shall visit the Project site after
installation is completed, but prior to energizing the system, to inspect, test, and
perform any necessary adjustments.
F.
System shall not be energized prior to factory start-up service. Start-up service shall
include a minimum of 4 hours of demonstration and instruction of system operation to
Owner staff.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.01
DIMMER CABINET AND DIMMERS
A.
Dimmer cabinet shall be Leviton a-2000 or equal by Strand Lighting Inc., or
Electronic Theaters Controls.
B.
Dimmer cabinet shall be recessed mounted in new construction projects, and wall
mounted in existing facilities. It shall be constructed of code gage formed steel and
aluminum structural members. Exterior surfaces shall be finished in gray or black
polyurethane paint.
C.
Cabinet shall be constructed to permit insertion and removal of dimmers and control
modules without the use of tools. Positive interlocking guides shall be provided for
precise alignment of the dimmers to the signal and power connectors in the cabinet.

Dimmer supports shall be incorporated into the sides of the cabinet, allowing clear
access to power, load and neutral terminals and wireways. Cabinet requiring
disassembly to access terminals and wireways, or requiring the use of tools for
replacement of dimmers and control modules, are not permitted.
D.
Cabinet shall be designed to contain no less than 12 plug-in dimmer modules.
E.
Provide low-noise fans to maintain temperatures at proper operating levels with all
dimmers under full load and ambient temperatures up to 40 degrees C. Cabinet shall
be provided with airflow sensors to shut off dimmers should safe operating
temperatures be exceeded.
F.
Racks shall be provided with lockable doors with a maximum swing radius of 20
inches to prevent unauthorized access to dimmers and control modules. Blank labels
shall be provided inside door dimmers for user identification of circuits.
G.
Racks shall be factory-tested and control modules shall be burned-in at elevated
temperatures for a minimum of 4 hours. Racks shall be UL listed for 120V
applications and shall be furnished with an interrupting capacity exceeding the
available fault current at the rack location. Interrupting capacity of racks shall be as
indicated on Drawings.
H.
Plug-in modules shall consist of 2-piece aluminum chassis containing 2 circuit
breakers, solid-state power devices and 2 filter chokes.
I.
Power and signal connections shall be recessed in self-aligning chassis to avoid
handling, storage and insertion damage.
J.
Dimming channels shall be capable of hot-patching cold incandescent loads up to its
full rated capacity. Dimmers shall be UL recognized and labeled for operation of
incandescent, fluorescent, cold cathode, neon, low-voltage, emergency, and non-dim
loads.
K.
Dimming channels shall produce full sine waves when the control signal is full on and
an output of zero volts when the control signal is off.
L.
The output voltage of each dimming channel shall be automatically regulated for
incoming line voltage variations except that output voltage cannot be increased above
a level equal to the difference between incoming line voltage and dimmer voltage
drop. Dimmer voltage drop shall not exceed 3 V. Line regulation shall be plus or
minus 2 percent V for one percent to 100 percent of rated current at any control
setting.
M.
Output voltage of dimming channels shall follow a modified square law curve from 0
percent to 100 percent control and shall be repeatable within plus or minus 2 volts.

Response time of dimmers shall not exceed 0.1 second.
Dimming curve
characteristics shall be factory set with no user adjustments required.
N.
Provide a mechanically held multi-pole lighting contactor for house lighting controls
in a NEMA 1 enclosure; locate this enclosure next to dimmer cabinet. Contactor shall
be ASCO 917 or equal.

1.
Dimmer modules shall be protected by 2 fully magnetic circuit breakers.
2.
Circuit breakers shall serve as load disconnects and shall be rated for an
interrupting capacity equal or greater to the rating of the fault current at the
cabinet location, or as indicated on drawings.
Dimmer modules shall include toroidal filter chokes to limit objectionable harmonics,
radiated radio frequencies, electromagnetic interference on conductors and acoustical
noise in load lamp filaments. Current rise time shall be not less than 350
microseconds measured at 90 degrees conductive angle from 10 percent to 90 percent
of the output wave form with the dimmer operating at maximum load.
ENTRANCE STATIONS
A.
Provide a momentary three position key operated switch at each main entrance or exit
door to control house lighting. Switches shall be as specified in section 16050-2.02B.1.b, and shall work as on/off control of the MPR general lighting. Provide an
additional key operated On/Off station at the stage lighting dimmer control location.
B.
Entrance stations shall fit into standard single gang boxes.

2.03
LIGHTING CONTROL SYSTEM
A.
The lighting controls station shall be capable of providing up to 18 channels for
dimmed and non-dimmed loads. It shall incorporate a key operated switch for the
control of the house lights, and an additional button switch to control the raising and
lowering a motorized projection screen.
B.
The control station shall be equipped with On/Off and On/Take control key switches,
and On/Off key switch for house lighting and auxiliary raise/lower screen button.
C.
The manual control system shall be wall mounted and be provided with a locking
door.
a. Provide a semi-flushed mounted Hoffman CSD20166W wall window-door
enclosure or equal for the lighting control station. Enclosure and door shall be
made of 16 gage steel, and be equipped with a clear window.
D.
2.04
The control system shall be Leviton CP-12-KSW/KOT-AUX Raise/Lower Screen-DO.
Equal products by Strand Lighting Inc. or Electronic Theaters Controls will be
acceptable.
LIGHTING EQUIPMENT
Note to Project Architect: In addition to Theatrical spot lights (ante proscenium) the design shall
reflect either track or spot/flood lights for on stage lighting. Coordinate with Design Manager and edit
this section accordingly. If directed to utilize spot/flood fixtures, use the same mounting approach as
the one utilized for the ante proscenium spot lights.
A.
Track Lighting: Contractor shall provide track mounted LSI 300 Series with related
power track. Track light fixtures shall be suitable for up to 300 watt lamps. Equal or
better products by other manufacturers will be acceptable.
1.
Housing shall be constructed of die-cast and sheet aluminum, with high
temperature black finish.
2.
Fixtures shall be equipped with necessary hardware to support color filter
media. Filters shall be red, blue, amber, and pink.
3.
Fixtures shall be equipped with louvers and hoods to control light spill and
glare.
4.
Performance with 300W narrow spot, 50% beam spread, and 2750K lamps
shall be:

B.
Theatrical Spot Lights (Anti-Proscenium): Fixture shall be light weight short throw,
all purpose lighting device. These fixtures shall have the minimum following
characteristics:
1.
500 Watts Fresnel lens spotlight with medium pre-focus socket. Lamp life shall
be 300 hours minimum.
2.
Tungsten halogen lights.
3.
Screwed feed focusing capability that ranges from narrow spot to full flood
without over-travel.
4.
Heat resistant Fresnel lens.
5.
Relamping should be possible without disturbing the pre-focusing lamp
alignment.
6.
The fixture shall be supplied with the following parts or features:
a.
Color frame holders.
b.
Spherical design alzak aluminum reflector.
c.
Rigid flat steel yoke.
d.
Spring tension side locking wheel.
e.
Three feet, three wires high temperature power cable with three wire
grounding twist-lock NEMA L5-20P connector.
f.
Four way barn door.
g.
Safety cable with spring clip included.
7. Fixture shall be finished with electrostatically applied baked black enamel.
8. Fixture shall be UL listed for up to 750 Watt applications. (Lamp size as indicated
on drawings)
9. Fixture shall be provided with heavy steel yokes, painted malleable iron C-clamps
adjustable for up to 2-inch ID pipe with tapped and threaded steel hanger pins.
Units shall rotate vertically through yokes for ease of focusing.
10. Fixture shall be Altman 165Q, Leviton 213-515, Strand Lighting 12081 Fresnelite,
or equal.
C.
Spot/Floods: Medium screw base socket Altman Lighting Inc. PAR38 fixture suitable
for 250 watt KR38/SP lamps.
1.
Fixture shall be of sheet steel construction and be equipped with:
a. Color frame holders.
b. Three position yoke adjustment.
c. Medium screw base socket.

d. Three feet, three wires high temperature power cable with three wire
grounding twist-lock NEMA L5-20P connector.
e. Four way barn door.
f. Safety cable with spring clip included.
g. Fixture shall be UL listed for up to 300 Watt applications (lamp size as
indicated on drawings).
h. Painted malleable iron C-clamps adjustable for up to 2-inch ID pipe with
tapped and threaded steel hanger pins. Units shall rotate vertically through
yokes for ease of focusing.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.01
INSTALLATION
A.
Furnish and install a completely functioning dimming system. Equipment, fittings,
and peripheral devices for correct system operation shall be provided.
1. Wall mounted dimmer cabinet with control components, and various associated
bypass and transfer switches shall together form a complete dimmer control
system, as indicated on Drawings.
2. Installation shall be in conformance with local and state codes, Specifications and
in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations, and appropriate industry
standards.
B.
Lighting instruments, items of equipment and individual components, where
applicable standards have been established, shall be listed by Los Angeles City Testing
Laboratory, Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL), or Under Writers
Laboratory. Equipment and parts shall be properly labeled prior to installation.
C.
Work shall be performed by a factory authorized distributor for brands of equipment.
Maintain a fully equipped service organization capable of furnishing adequate repair
service to equipment.
D.
The system shall not be energized before the installation is inspected and tested.
E.
In existing facilities any work not indicated to be changed or abandoned is to remain in
use.
F.
At existing Project sites, rearrange raceways, panels, and enclosures that are necessary
for new installation and alter circuitry as required for new dimmer boards. Where

necessary, replace system wiring with THHN or THWN. Existing wiring shall be
utilized only when expressly indicated on Drawings.
G.
At existing Project sites, provide necessary alterations to coordinate and connect
existing with the new electrical work. When Work is complete, the entire electrical
installation, existing and new shall be compatible and in satisfactory operating
condition.
H.
At existing Project sites, removed equipment shall be inspected by the IOR for purpose
of salvage. Equipment deemed not useful shall be disposed of in accordance with this
Specification.
3.02
DIMMER CABINETS AND SWITCHES
A.
Provide and install dimmer board cabinet, local remotes, bypass on/off switches, relays
and accessories as indicated on Drawings. Provide connections as indicated on
dimmer board wiring diagrams and schedules.
B.
Energize and demonstrate system and provide the following:
1. Package containing necessary spare parts (e.g. dimmer modules, colored filters).
2. Special testing tools and equipment as applicable.
3. Miscellaneous parts.
4. Operating and service manual diagrams, cost breakdown and submittal data.
5. Dimmer cabinet nameplates with school name, firm name and address, acceptance
date and KW loads.
3.03
STAGE LIGHTING DIMMER SYSTEM TESTS
A.
Provide instruments for testing and demonstrate in presence of the IOR that circuits
and wiring test free of shorts and grounds.
B.
Furnish labor, instruments, appliances, equipment, and materials necessary to
demonstrate to the IOR that installations perform as required and are as specified
herein.
C.
The Owner reserves the right to make independent tests of equipment furnished to
determine whether or not equipment complies with requirements specified herein and
to accept or reject equipment on the basis of results thereby obtained.

3.04
OPERATING/SERVICING MANUALS AND RECORD DRAWINGS
A.
Deliver 5 copies of the operating and servicing manual for stage lighting and dimmer
system to the Architect. Complete manuals shall be bound in flexible binders; data
shall be typewritten or drafted.
B.
Complete manuals shall include instructions necessary for proper operation and
servicing of system and shall include complete line circuit diagrams of system, wiring
destination schedules for circuits leaving dimmer cabinet, schematic diagrams of
dimmer boards and components, transistor complements,. Manuals shall include asbuilt plan showing conductors, conduits routing, and circuit designations used.
C.
Record drawings shall show the system exactly as it was installed including location of
components.
3.05
TRAINING
A.
3.06
Manufacturer of dimming system shall provide an engineering representative on the
Project site, after installation has been completed, to instruct the Owner staff in the
operation and maintenance of the system. Instruction time shall be not be less than 8
hours.
PORTABLE EQUIPMENT
A.
Furnish portable equipment complying with requirements specified herein to the IOR
at site as follows:
1. Furnish and deliver 100 percent spare lamps and color frames as specified.
a. Furnish and deliver 4 (red, blue, amber, and pink) filters of each color.
2. Furnish and deliver 2 spare dimmer modules.

NAME PLATES
A.

Local/remote switches, dimmer bypass on/off switches, and transfer switches shall
bear nameplates describing switch functions (e.g. local/remote dimmer operation).
CLEAN UP
A.
Remove rubbish, debris, and waste materials and legally dispose of off the Project site.
