A pregnant woman can also pass chlamydia to
her baby during birth.
Symptoms of Chlamydia
Many times a person does not have symptoms. But the bacteria can cause serious
damage to a person’s reproductive system.

Treatment of Chlamydia

Chlamydia is CURABLE.

Chlamydia can be
treated with antibiotics.

If left untreated
Chlamydia can develop
into PID (pelvic
inflammatory disease)
which can lead to:



Infertility
Chronic pain
Even death
Genital Herpes

Genital herpes is caused by a virus
(herpes simplex 2)

It is spread through skin to skin contact
with the infection, sexual contact, and can
be passed during pregnancy (but is rare)
Symptoms of Genital Herpes

Symptoms are similar in
men and women.





Itching or burning feeling in
the infected area.
Small red bumps that turn
into blisters/sores.
The sores may ooze fluid.
Pain or burning sensations
during urination.
Flu-like symptoms (fever,
swollen glands, headache,
muscle pain)
Treatment of Genital Herpes

Genital Herpes is
NOT CURABLE

There are some
antiviral drugs that
can help prevent
symptoms of herpes
but they will not cure
you from the disease.
Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is caused by the bacteria
Neisseria gonorrheoae.

Can be spread through contact with the
infection and sexual contact. It can infect
the genitals, rectum, and throat.

Can also be spread during childbirth.
Symptoms of Gonorrhea

Women






Abnormal vaginal
discharge.
Pain during urination.
Irregular vaginal bleeding.
Frequent urination.
Lower abdominal pain.
Fever over 100 degrees F.

Men




Abnormal discharge or
liquid from the penis.
Pain or itching during
urination.
Painful or swollen testicles
or prostate gland.
Fever over 100 degrees F.
Treatments for Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is CURABLE.

Gonorrhea is treated with
antibiotics.

If left untreated it can
spread to other parts of
the body and lead to
infertility in men and
women.
HPV
Human Papillomavirus

HPV is caused by a virus.

It can be spread through contact with the
infection (skin to skin) and sexual contact.

It can be spread to the baby during birth
but is rare and can be managed.
Symptoms of HPV

Genital warts can appear on
The outside of the penis, vagina, or opening
of the anus.
 The inside of the vagina, anus, and throat.


The warts may be small or large, flat or
raised, single or in clusters resembling
cauliflower.
Treatment for Genital
Warts/HPV

Genital warts/HPV is
NOT CURABLE.

There are medications
that can help treat the
warts on the outside of
the body.


Liquids, creams, gels that
are perscribed by a doctor.
OTC wart medications will
not work on genital warts.
Wart can also be frozen off
but is painful and will only
be used if no other method
works.
Pubic Lice

Pubic lice is caused by a parasite. Insects
found in the genital area of humans.

Can be spread through sexual contact and
contact with the infection.

Mostly found in the genital area on pubic hair
but can be found in leg hair, armpit hair,
mustache, beard, eyebrow, or eyelashes.
Symptoms of Pubic Lice

Itching in the genital
area.

Visible nits (lice eggs)
or crawling lice.
Treatment of Pubic Lice

Pubic Lice is CURABLE.

A lice killing lotion,
shampoo, or mousee is
used to kill the pubic lice.
You can get these
medications at the drug
store without a
perscription.
Syphilis

Syphilis is caused by the bacteria
Treponema pallidum.

It can be spread by contact with the
infection and sexual contact.

A pregnant woman can pass syphilis to
her unborn baby.
Symptoms of Syphilis
Syphilis has 4 stages


Primary syphilis: open
painless sore called a
chancre. Will appear
where the syphilis entered
the body.
Secondary syphilis: more
serious symptoms
including: fever, patchy
hair loss, aching muscles
and joints, swollen glands,
sore throat, headaches,
weight loss, lack of energy,
rashes or lesions on hands
and feet.


Latent stage: begins when the
secondary stages symptoms
disappear. These symptoms
are hidden or invisible. At this
point the bacteria is inactive
but stays in the body.
Tertiary Stage: Most feared
stage. The bacteria does
serious damage to internal
organs, including brain, heart,
nerves, eyes, liver, bones,
joints, and blood vessels. May
take years to show up. Can
lead to numbness, paralysis,
gradual blindness, insanity,
and death.

Syphilis is
CURABLE.
