What is folliculitis?




Small, white headed pimples
Can result in hair loss or scarring
Two types: superficial folliculitis and deep
folliculitis
Caused by a bacteria called staph

Causes

Friction from shaving

Excessive perspiration

Inflammatory skin conditions

Injuries to your skin

Covering your skin with plastic dressings or adhesive tape

Exposure to coal tar, pitch or creosote
Symptoms of superficial folliculitis



Clusters of small red bumps
Pus-filled blisters
Itchy and tenderness







Staphylococcal folliculitis
Pseudomonas folliculitis (hot tub
folliculitis).
Tinea barbae
Pseudofolliculitis barbae

Large swollen bumps
Pus-filled blisters

Treatment


Antibiotic applied to the skin or taken
orally
For facial folliculitis: use an electric
shaver, shaving gel, moisturizing
after-shave
Risk factors







Medical conditions that reduce your resistance to
infection
A pre-existing skin condition
Trauma to your skin from surgery
Long-term antibiotic therapy for acne
Topical corticosteroid therapy
Obesity
Living in a warm, humid climate
