(Holgerson, P., et al 2006).




To determine the amount of xylitol in saliva and plaque after
use of chewing gum, sucking tablets, candy tablets, toothpaste,

12 healthy children (6 boys, 6 girls mean age 11.5 years)
Unstimulated saliva was samples at 1,3,8,16, and 30 minutes
after use.
Supragingival plaque was collected and pooled after 5,15,
and 30 minutes.

(Holgerson, P., et al 2006).



All xylitol containing products resulted in significantly
increased levels immediately after intake and
remained elevated for 8 – 16 minutes in the different
groups.
The highest mean value in saliva was obtained
immediately after use of chewing gum.
The lowest mean was demonstrated after using
toothpaste.
Xylitol Concentration in Saliva and Dental Plaque after Use
of Various Xylitol-Containing Products
(Holgerson, P., et al 2006).



No significant differences were demonstrated between
chewing gum, candy tablets, sucking tablets, and rinses.
In dental plaque after using the rinse the values remained
significantly elevated during the entire 30 minute follow
up.
Commonly used xylitol containing products gave elevated
concentrations of xylitol in saliva and plaque for at least
8 minutes after intakes.
