Biomarker for Colorectal Cancer Overview The pathogenesis of 15% of human cancers has been linked to inflamma:on. One of the most prevalent inflamma:on driven cancers is coli:s-‐associated colorectal cancer (CRC). Annually in Ireland -‐ CRC is responsible for 15% of all cancer related deaths with an average of 1445 cases. What Problem does it Solve / Advantages Be(er Diagnosis Early stages of progression to CRC, par:cularly dis:nguishing between inflamma:on and true dysplasia, is not as straighOorward, and there is a large amount of varia:on between pathologists iden:fica:on and grading of dysplasia. There is a serious requirement for an addi:onal early marker of dysplasia in this context, and the role and expression of enzyme proteins involved in inflamma:on has been examined. Pa:ents who have had coli:s for >10 years are advised to undergo regular colonoscopy to detect preinvasive neoplas:c lesions High grade inflamma:on is also regarded as an indica:on for colectomy. The increased expression of enzyme proteins ‘caspases-‐4’ and ‘Caspase -‐5 ‘ correlated to inflamma:on and disease ac:vity in irritable bowel disease and CRC pa:ents.
