Childhood cancer Caused by immature retinal cells in one or both eyes It is most common eye cancer in children 350 new cases in US each year and over 5000 cases worldwide Common Signs A white “glow” in the pupil of the eye in dim lighting Crossed or misaligned eyes Poor vision Swollen tissue around the eye Diagnosis Fundoscopic examination Computed tomography scan MRI Blood tests Genetic and/or DNA testing Treatment Individualized for each patient – patients survival is primary goal Enucleation External Beam Radiation Radioactive Plaques Treatment (cont.) Laser Therapy Cryotherapy Chemoreduction/Chemotherapy New Clinical Trial Treatments Case Study Child diagnosed at 2 years of age with Bilateral Retinoblastoma Treated with Chemotherapy and Radiation Both eyes eventually had to be enucleated He developed unique adaptations Implications Early diagnosis is critical If left untreated cancer can spread Over 95% of children in US survive and lead normal lives Follow up appointments are important to detect possible secondary cancers
