Wikis, Web 2.0, and Social Bookmarking (Oh, my!) An Overview By: Aimee Martin Wiki Wiki What is a wiki? Let’s take a look at a “quick” video . . . by the way “wiki” means “quick” in Hawaiian. If the wiki is public, then you do not need an account to browse on the site. If it's private, you need to be a member of Wikispaces to join and view the wiki. Does the site require an email address to create an account? Yes. Are there privacy settings available? Yes. Wild and Wonderful Widgets One awesome feature of a wiki is the ability to include a widget. A widget is a small snippet of code that allows users to view or manipulate text or information on a website. Videos, interactive quizzes and polls as well as animated text can be embedded in a wiki through the use of widgets. Ex. Glogster, Teacher Tube videos, Google Calendars Create your own wiki! Create an educational wiki for your professional needs or allow students to create content and collaborate on a shared classroom space. Go to: http://www.wikispaces.com/site/for/teachers100K. Load Delicious on all the computers you use and add tags at anytime. Share your hyperlinks with others. Make your Delicious bookmarks public or private. See how many others have your favorite site(s) loaded. Find helpful sites to use with the curriculum you teach within Delicious. Tagging helps you stay organized folks! “Folksonomy” is a user-generated taxonomy used to categorize, track, group, search, and retrieve Web pages, photographs, Web links and other web content using open ended labels called tags. It improves searches by allowing users to label information with their own language. How does Delicious help you? A great tool for sharing lists of web sites. Keep track of bookmarks for yourself. Create lists of relevant links for your students (and share them!) See what other people are bookmarking. Spend less time “Googling” and more time finding sites of interest to other educators!
