A Study on Framework and Methods of Online Information Literacy Instruction LiWu(Lowie) Shanghai, China Sept.20th, 2006 About me Education 2005-present Peking University Beijing, China Ph.D. Candidate, Communication Science 2002-2005 Peking University Beijing, China M.A., Library and Information Science 1998-2002 Northeast Normal University Changchun, China B.A., Library Science Experience 2005.4-2006.1 Elsevier Pte Ltd Beijing Representative Office Beijing, China Training Consultant (part-time job) 2004.9-2005.1 The Library of Peking University Beijing, China Reference Librarian (part-time job) 2003.4-2004.7 Institute of Digital Library, Peking Beijing, China Assistant Researcher (part-time job) Interested Fields Information Literacy Instruction; Scholarly Communication System; Open Access; Content • • • • Background Framework and Methods of Online ILI Case Study: Webtraining of PKU Library Challenges facing before Online ILI Definition • The Online ILI refers to web-based training or distance instruction taking advantage of computer and internet technology, with the goal of developing users’ abilities to retrieval and use electronic resources in digital age. – From instructional contents, online ILI mainly educates users how to acquire electronic resources; – From the implementing methods, it emphasizes to fully make use of new media to implement ILI, such as computer and Internet. Why implementing Online ILI • There are always not enough reference librarians to offer as many enough face-to-face library instructions. • While some students would not like to attend such trainings in despite of their poor information literacy. • Compared the traditional library instruction, Online ILI has the following advantages: – – – – Easy-to-use Intuitive Interactive Individual The Current Status of Online ILI Service Worldwide • Online ILI started from early 1990’s in academic libraries in developed countries. • There are some well-known projects in those countries, among which, TITL is known to all. • Another important trend is that some projects implement online ILT in a collaborative way based on the original Library Consortium or University System. • Online ILI is still in initial stage in mainland in China. Content • • • • Background Framework and Methods of Online ILI Case Study: Webtraining of PKU Library Challenges facing before Online ILI Framework of Web Training(1) • The framework of web training comprises of content framework and function framework. – The former prefers to all kinds of contents that web training should offer; – The latter means all the self-study frameworks such as navigation system, user interactive mechanism ,service dispatching and resource linking. Framework of Web Training(2) • The online information literacy competence is composed by the following two kinds of competence: – Information technology competence: This is basic technology competence for users to acquire electronic resources; – Information acquiring competence: Namely, this kind of competence refers to the ability of retrieval, evaluation, and use of electronic resources. Framework of Web Training(3) • Whether employing websites or Network Education Platform, web training should offer function frameworks to enable patrons to selfstudy easily. – Navigation System: Provide different paths for users to find the specific training material quickly. – User Interactive Mechanism: Offer users an interactive learning environment. – Service Dispatching: Switch web training to other digital services such as Virtual Reference Service. – Resource Linking: Recommend some linking of other information literacy instructional material. Implementing Methods of Web Training (1) • There are two ways to implement web training in aboard. – to directly build instructional websites; – to implement web training by Network Education Platform. Implementing Methods of Web Training (2) • The comparison of these two ways – It is very convenient and quick for librarians to offer a systemic courseware by using NEP, but the cost of NEP is a big barrier to most libraries. – The former is fit for general library instruction while the latter is suitable to offer a formal course. – Direct building instruction websites is a better choice to most of the Chinese academic libraries, since this kind of web sites costs less and is easily promoted . Implementing Methods of Web Training (3) • Employing websites to implement web training should emphasize on taking advantages of online instruction instead of simply releasing training materials in the form of Word or PowerPoint. • Librarians ought to make full use of the virtual interactive function and the individual service when offering web training. Content • • • • Background Framework and Methods of Online ILI Case Study: Webtraining of PKU Library Challenges facing before Online ILI Introduction • Webtraining Project of PKU Library was launched in 2003. The Webtraining System was officially released at the beginning of 2004, which adopted the model of web file plus PowerPoint. • Webtraining System was based on the One Hour’s Lecture Link and was built as the company tutorial of Selective Course Link. • Now, this system is widely used by users in PKU, especially the freshmen, also this tutorial is fully recognized by other academic libraries in China. Framework of PKU Webtraining Content Framework of PKU Webtraining • Retrieval of Electronic Resources Link • Introduction to Resources and Services in Library Link • Use of Popular Software Link • Links to the Other Tutorials Link Functional Framework of PKU Webtraining • • • • Navigation System Link User Interactive Mechanism Link Individual Service Service Dispatching Implementing Methods of PKU Webtraining • Workflow: – Firstly, librarians made PPT files in an unified way, then the technical staff converted all the PPT files into Web files, added content navigation and dynamic demos into each subject, and built an instructional websites in the end. • Model: – Web files plus PowerPoint presentation. – The dynamic demos included web-based PPT file Example and AVI-based video file Example. Content • • • • Background Framework and Methods of Online ILI Case Study: Webtraining of PKU Library Challenges facing before Online ILI Collaboration • There isn’t an effective collaboration mechanism among libraries in China, which will lead to: – Waste of time and energy of librarians; – The poor quality of courseware due to no standards; • Set up collaboration mechanism in a certain scope, and the collaboration models includes: – Collaborations among different academic libraries; – Collaborations between librarians and teaching faculty; Maintenance • It is normal that retrieval systems or service platforms of electronic resources will be updated or changed frequently. • In order to keep the web training system fresh, a proper maintenance policy should be set up. – – – – how to obtain the updated information in time who are in charge of the task of maintenance how often this work should be done …… Evaluation • There exit some difficulties in evaluating Online ILI. • How to evaluate – set up a guideline and essential indicators The indicators should touch two aspects that are content level and form level. – design a high-quality online questionnaire THANK YOU [email protected] One Hour’s Lecture Selective Course: The retrieval and applications of the electronic resources Part One: Retrieval of Electronic Resources Part Two: Introduction to Resources and Services in Library Part Three:Use of Popular Software Part Four:Link to the Other Tutorials Navigation System User Interactive Mechanism User Interactive Mechanism User Interactive Mechanism Web-based PPT file 主题字段 作者字段 来源出版物名称字段 作者/作者机构地址字段 设置其他检索条件
