Economics of the Firm Competitive Pricing Techniques Every business has a goal. What’s the goal of your business? We will be assuming that pricing decisions are being made to maximize current period profits Total Costs (note that total costs here are economic costs. Industries with globally scale economies tend to develop as natural monopolies (the market should – and will – be serviced by one producer). This can happen if production exhibits increasing marginal productivity, or if there are large fixed costs.
