LAB SAFETY GUIDELINES: Rules to follow while in the laboratory Overview for Today Thursday February 7, 2013: • KWL Activity • WHMIS Symbols • Rules to follow in the Lab • Activity Sheet (Homework) KWL Activity Using a separate sheet of paper divide three columns as followed: K – What you already know W – What you want to know L – What you have learned from this lesson. WHMIS SYMBOLS Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System COMPRESSED GAS • Contents are under pressure. • Do NOT puncture or store it near a heat source • Examples: - Propane Canisters - Oxygen Tanks - Aerosol Containers FLAMMABLE & COMBUSTIBLE • Contents will catch on fire if ignited. • Keep away from flames • Examples: - Gasoline - Butane - Aerosol Canisters OXIDIZING MATERIAL • Contain oxygen and increase the risk of fire. • Examples: - Hydrogen Peroxide - Potassium Permanganate POISONOUS & INFECTIOUS: ACUTE • Can cause death if exposed to in small amounts. • Examples: – Cyanide – Chlorine Gas POISONOUS & INFECTIOUS: CHRONIC • Can cause long term health effects. • Examples: – Asbestos – Lead – Mercury POISONOUS & INFECTIOUS: BIOHAZARD • Variety of chemicals which can cause harm to person. • Examples: - Medical Waste - Sewage - Decaying matter CORROSIVE MATERIALS • Can burn skin and eyes. • Examples: - Bleach - Toilet bowl cleaners - Sulphuric Acid REACTIVE MATERIALS • Can react with water to form noxious gases. • Examples: - Picric Acid - TNT REVIEW HHPS SYMBOLS Rules to Follow in Lab Labs allow us to see practical results of what we are learning in class. They can be fun and very intellectually stimulating… • Or they can result in injury if the set rules are not followed! REVIEW LAB SAFETY GUIDELINES - HANDOUT • General, Chemical, Glassware, Clothing, Behaviour, Spills, Tubing, Centrifuge, Thermometer, Bunsen Burner, Emergency Equipment, Waste • Tour the Science lab and get acquainted with the safety apparatuses located around the lab. HOMEWORK Find 3 – 5 different items in your household illustrating the various WHMIS and HHPS symbols. Questions?
