A Biodiversity Hotspot at Risk: the Sustainability Dilemma of the Colombian Pacific Coast Paula Moreno Yale World Fellow 2014, President – Manos Visibles (Visible Hands) Home to incredible cultural and ecological diversity, the Pacific Region of Colombia is facing severe challenges related to inequality, exclusion and violence. A history of geographic isolaXon and insXtuXonal neglect has resulted in some of the worst development indicators in the country, parXcularly those related to poverty, public health, employment, and educaXon. Being one of the global biodiversity hotspots, this region has a major constraint because of illegal mining, drug trafficking and illegal Xmber extracXon.
