Private Health Insurance’s Impact on
Health Care
• Majority of Americans received private health
insurance as part of employer fringe benefits.
• This coverage permitted many Americans to
receive health care services in an economical
fashion.
• It also resulted in the delivery of health care
services becoming a factor in the American
economy (McWay, 2008).
Medicare & Medicaid Programs

all persons over the age of 64, regardless of
financial need.

costs of the Medicare program, namely, the
prospective payment system (PPS) (McWay,
2008).

• A complex series of steps, overseen by the
medical staff coordinator.
• See Figure 1-5 in textbook (p. 22) for 6 step
process (McWay, 2008).
Health Care Prior to the 1900s
• A loose collaboration of efforts
• By individual physicians who worked
independently of one another
• Poorly trained, generally under an older
physician
• Eventually, medical colleges
• Most time spent in homes of office, not in
hospitals which were perceived negatively
(McWay, 2008).
Accreditation in the 20th Century
• The Joint Commission (JC)
▫ Formerly known as the Joint Commission on
Accreditation of Healthcare Organzations
(JCAHO).
• The American Osteopathic Association (AOA)
