SUICIDE??????? •Suicide Act 1961, it was illegal to commit suicide and anyone who tried and failed would be subject to legal proceedings and possible detention. •The Suicide Act 1961 brought a change to the law so that suicide is no longer a criminal act. •However, it is still illegal to 'aid or abet' another person in taking their own life, and anyone who does this may face a maximum 14 years imprisonment. Different forms of Suicide Suicide Suicide is the act of intentionally ending one's own life; it is sometimes a noun for one who has committed, or attempted the act. Assisted Suicide The deliberate hastening of death by a terminally ill patient with assistance from a doctor, family member, or another individual. Para Suicide Sometimes called Deliberate Self-Harm. It is a term used when someone self harms, but does not kill themselves. Could be a positive thing because they may just be harming themselves and releasing anger, instead of committing suicide. Suicide is the third lading cause of death among adolescents and teenagers. According to the national institute of mental health about 8 out of every 100,000 teenagers committed suicide in 2000. Depression is the leading cause of suicide. The National Youth Violence Prevention resource centre found that almost 1 in 5 teens had thought about suicide. About 1 in 6 teens had made plans for suicide. More than 1 in 12 teens had attempted suicide in the last year. Why teens might commit suicide? Depression - Signs of developing depression in teens include: Unhappiness Isolated behavior Drop in school performance Loss of interest in activities that formerly were sources of enjoyment Feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness, helplessness Change in sleep habits and eating habits Self-neglect Preoccupation with sad thoughts or death Continued…… Substance abuse Behavioral problems Family history Anxiety High expectations of self Suicide in men and women aged 15 and over Suicide Facts The suicide rate in men aged 15 and over declined during the 1990s, until a sharp increase in 1998. In 2005, the rate was the lowest throughout the period 1991 to 2005, at 17.5 suicides per 100,000 population. Female rates lower, at around six suicides per 100,000 population. Psychotherapy Approaches this therapy is effective for many patients. Bio effects • Going through adolescence so her hormones are changing •Self harm •Sexually transmitted diseases, because of life on the streets Psycho effects •Going through depression •Getting stress from school •Severely depressed •Low self esteem •Lack of confidence •Self harm makes her feel in control of herself so this is abnormal behaviour Social effects •Poor education •Living in poverty •Social exclusion •No money •No job conclusion Based on the evidence that we have presented, it shows that suicide in teenagers is on the fall, but it is very common today. Suicide rates in males has decreased immensely, as they have more pressures to deal with (e.g. getting a good education, peer pressure, trying to make friends) whereas it has stayed average amongst women.
