ZF Biolabs
ZF Biolabs
ZF Biolabs is a spanish biotechnology, established in 2003
and fully devoted to R&D activities in biomedicine and
toxicology, working exclusively with zebrafish as the
selected model organism.
ZF Biolabs
Zebrafish use in Biomedical
Research
ZF Biolabs
ZF Biolabs R&D
i) Development of toxicity assays based on the use of
the zebrafish embryo (develomental toxicity,
neurotoxicity, cardiotoxicity, hepatotoxicity and short
term toxicity).
ii) Functional genomics: analysis of genes and
phenotypes in zebrafish using morpholino
oligonucleotide loss-of-function technique to study
human diseases.
iii)Development of new zebrafish supporting
technologies aimed to improve the efficiency of
embryo production.
ZF Biolabs
ZF BIOLABS COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH
PROJECTS
 Partner of the EU R&D Project Nuclear envelope-linked rare
human diseases: from molecular pathophysiology towards
clinical applications” coordinated by the Medical University of
Vienna. The role of ZF Biolabs is knocking down Lamin-A gene in
zebrafish, screening for functional readouts of pathological
phenotypes, identifying molecular drug targets and screening for
new drugs.
 Partner of the project “Role of FAAH in neuroprotection” in
collaboration with Univ. of Salamanca, to develop a transgenic
zebrafish model for discovering new neuroprotective drugs.
 In collaboration with Canal de Isabel II, the public company in
charge of managing the water in the Madrid region, ZF Biolabs is
involved in the research project “Development of a new toxicity
assay for detecting cyanotoxins in drinkable water using
zebrafish embryos”.
ZF Biolabs
ZF Biolabs interest in USA
• ZF Biolabs is in contact with some USA Pharmaceutical
companies, which are interested in the new toxicity assays
and related zebrafish technology.
• ZF Biolabs will present its R&D results at the Health and
Environmental Sciences Institute (HESI) Workshop on
Alternative Assays For Developmental Toxicity, that will be
held on February 27-28, 2007, in Cary (North Carolina).
• According to the possibility of collaboration with US
companies ZF Biolabs will study alliances with established
US companies and/or other alternatives.
