Lithuania: some facts
• Lithuania’s economy is the fastest growing economy in
Central and Eastern Europe (according to analysis made by
the banks Hansabank Markets and LB Kiel)
• GDP rose by 5.7% in the first half of 2002 and is projected
to rise an annual 5.2% - 5.4% in the coming years
• Annual inflation rate fluctuates at about 0.1% - 0.2%
• 17% industry growth in 2001, compared to 2000
 Retail sales increased by 14% in the first seven months of
2002, compared to the same period of the previous year
Lithuania: facts 2
• Cumulative FDI has been increasing fastest in Central and
Eastern Europe, currently almost USD 3.5 billion, which
makes around 21% of GDP
• Lithuania is rapidly becoming an export economy, exports
now make 38% of GDP and are continuing to grow; export
volumes totaled USD 5.2 billion in 2001.
• The local currency – Litas – has been stable against the
dollar and other major currencies since 1994
• On October 1, 2002 Lithuania officially applied for the OECD
membership – the first among the three Baltic countries
