Fennoscandian region of northern Europe.
It borders Sweden on the west, Russia on
the east, and Norway on the north, while
Estonia lies to its south across the Gulf of
Finland.
The state of Finland consists of 6 provinces.
The capital city is Helsinki.
The native language for most of the
population is Finnish and the other official
language is Swedish.

Finland is a democratic, parliamentary
republic with a mostly Helsinki-based
central government and local
governments in 348 municipalities.
 The current president is Tarja Halonen.

Has a humid and cool semi continental
climate. Is suitable for grain farming in
the southernmost regions, but not further
north.
 Finnish landscape is mostly flat with few
hill.
 Is a country of
thousands of lakes
and islands.

The territory of Finland can be subdivided
into three ecoregions: the Scandinavian
and Russian taiga, Sarmatic mixed forests
and Scandinavian Montane Birch forest
and grasslands.
 Has a diverse and extensive range of
fauna. There are at least sixty native
mammalian species, 248 breeding bird
species, over seventy fish species and
eleven reptile and frog species present
today, many migrating from neighbouring
countries thousands of years ago.



Literature in modern Finland is in a healthy state, with
detective stories enjoying a particular boom of popularity.
 Finns have made major contributions to handicrafts and
industrial design. Finnish architecture is famous around the
world.
 The Finnish rock-music scene emerged in 1960s. Notable
Finnish rock and metal acts include: Wigwam, Nightwish,
Sonata Arctica, The Rasmus, HIM, Apocalyptica and the
monster rockers Lordi.
 Traditional Finnish cuisine is a combination of European,
Fennoscandian and Western Russian elements. Is notable
for the use of whole meal products and berries. The food is
generally simple, fresh and healthy. Alcoholic drinks form
an important part of the Finnish culture.





The Temppeliaukio church is one
of the most popular tourist
attractions in the city; half a million
people visit it annually.
Locals often spend sunny days at
the Hietaniemi beach.
Tourists in the north of the country
in winter often enjoy trips in
reindeer sleighs with Sami drivers,
or in dog sleighs.
