– Home to 22.9 million people
– Largely the population is Chinese in origin.

Former known as Formosa (beautiful island)
The Taiwan Strait which separates it from mainland
China is about 100 miles wide.
Steep mountains rise quickly from the eastern side, but
slope gradually down to a broad coastal plain in the
western part of the island.

Brief History of Taiwan
• Before 1600’s Malay-Polynesian decent were the only inhabitants of Taiwan.

They refered to the island as Pakan.
In 1590, first Western Ship passed by the island. Named Ilha Formasa by a
Dutch Navigator.
1662 Dutch were defeated by Cheng Cheng-Kung, a Chinese Pirate, loyal to
the Ming Dynasty.
1895 Taiwan was handed over to Japan in military defeat.
– Educational system to same level and style of Japan
– Infrastructure, trains, roads, industry were developed extensively
• 1945, Taiwan was given back to China
• 1949, Nationalist fleeing defeat in the PRC civil war went to Taiwan
– 2 million Chinese came at this time.
• 1952-1972 Kuomintang build Taiwan up economically
• 1971 Nixon announced One China Policy
– Bad News for an independent Taiwan
• 1996 First Presidential election by the people of Taiwan

Politics
• Taiwan was the first constitutional republic
in Asia.
• A multi-party democracy since early 1990s
• From 1949-1996,it was an authoritarian
one party system led by Nationalist Party.
• The Democratic Progressive Party and the
Nationalist Party are the two main parties.
• Taipei is the Nation’s capital.
Constitution
• Based on the Three Principles of the People
– 1.Nationalism
• Equal treatment, sovereign international status for the country
– 2. Democracy
• Assures every individual the right to political and civil liberties
– 3. People’s livihood
• Powers granted to the government must ultimately serve the welfare of
the people by building strong and prosperous economy and a fair, just
society.
• Guarantees the freedoms of speech, residence, travel, assembly

& confidential communication, religion, & association
Other rights & Freedoms will be protected so long as they do not
violate social order or public interest.
Central Government
• Five Branches
– 1.Executive Yuan
• Eight Minisitries
–
Interior, Foreign Affairs, National Defense, Finance, Education, Justice, Economic affairs, and
Transportation and communications
– 2. Legislative Yuan
• Highest legislative body of the state, popularly elected representatives who serve for three
years and are eligible for reelection. 255 members elected in 2001.
– 3. Judicial Yuan
• Highest judicial body of the state
• The Council of Grand Justices as its main body. The Seventh Council of Grand Justices
consists of 15 grand justices, including the president and vice president of the Judicial Yuan.
– 4.Examination Yuan
• Responsible for the examination, employment, and management of all civil service personnel
in the Republic of China
– 5. Control Yuan
• Responsible for correcting government officials at all levels and monitoring the government
through the powers of impeachment, censure, and audit.
