Great Britain Great Britain • Great Britain is an island off the coast of continental Europe. It is the ninth largest island in the world, and the third most populous. Politically, Great Britain refers to a number of surrounding islands, and the territories of England, Scotland, and Wales. Kingdom of Great Britain • The Kingdom of Great Britain was a sovereign state that existed from May 1, 1707 to December 31, 1800. The state was created with the Treaty of Union of 1706. It included the whole island of Great Britain, and several surrounding islands. A single parliament and government controlled the kingdom. United Kingdom • On January 1, 1801, the kingdoms of Great Britain and Ireland merged to create the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. It lasted until 1922, when the Irish Free State left the United Kingdom, leading it to be renamed the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Today, the United Kingdom is very successful and has the world’s sixth-largest economy by nominal GDP and eighth-largest by purchasing power parity. Great Britain at the Winter Olympics • Great Britain is the team that enters athletes from the United Kingdom. They have not been very successful at the Winter Olympics. They have won 21 medals overall, and have never won more than four in a single Winter Olympics. Altogether they have won eight gold medals, three silver, and ten bronze. Government • Great Britain is a constitutional monarchy. The hereditary monarchy is limited to little more than performing ceremonial functions. Most of the power is in Parliament, which is made up of the House of Commons, the House of Lords, and the crown. People • Great Britain has the fourth most people in Europe. The English make up more than 80% of the population, and the Scottish make up about 10%. Also, there are smaller groups of Irish and Welsh descent.
