MONKEY AND HUNTER
EXPERIMENT
DRAFT
The monkey and hunter experiment
The monkey and hunter experiment is a very useful demonstration of projectile motion and the
independence of horizontal and vertical vectors in Physics. It is typically demonstrated at AS
Level Physics, but a discussion of it could be had with more able GCSE students, and it
remains a popular experiment to show on Open Evenings.

An 3-12V electromagnet
A low voltage power supply
Long 4mm leads, crocodile clips, aluminium foil
A ‘monkey’ typically an iron or steel can
Stomp air rocket, or a nerf gun which shoots soft foam projectiles
Where should the hunter aim their gun in order to hit the monkey, should the monkey release
their grip from the branch the moment the bullet leaves the gun’s barrel?
This experiment relies on an electromagnet within a circuit, (which is holding up the ‘monkey’),
which switches off when the bullet/projectile breaks the circuit upon being fired.
