Basic Electrical Principles
And
Ignition System
Customer Education
Atom
• Protons, neutrons,
electrons
• Copper, silver, gold
best conductors of
electricity
• Free electron is able
to move from atom
to atom
Customer Education
Electrical Terminology
• Voltage – Electrical pressure in a circuit
(Measured in volts)
• Current – Flow of electrons moving past a
point in a circuit (Measured in amperes)
• Resistance – Opposition to the flow of
electrons (Measured in ohm’s)
• Circuit – A complete path that controls the
rate and direction of electron flow
Customer Education
Magnetism
• Lines of Flux
– Invisible lines of
force
• North and south
poles
– Lines of flux flow to
opposite poles
• Permanent magnet
verses temporary
magnet
Customer Education
Induction
• Production of
voltage and current
– Conductor passes
through a magnetic
field
– Motion must be
present
Customer Education
Current Flow
• AC Current = Flows
in 2 directions
– Source is from
magnetic induction
• DC Current = Flows
in only one direction
– Source is either a
battery, or a device
with diodes
Customer Education
Series Circuit
• Current can flow
through only one
path
Customer Education
Parallel Circuit
• More than one path
for current to go
– Will have a “T” in the
circuit

Ignition Systems
Customer Education
Ignition System
• Flywheel has
magnets
– Lines of flux
– Motion
• Ignition module
supplies electricity to
the spark plug
Customer Education
Flywheel
• Flywheels house
magnets
– Provides a north and
south pole
– Mounted on outer
diameter
Customer Education
Ignition Module Coils
• Primary winding
– 74 Turns
• Secondary winding
– 4,400 Turns
– Connects to spark plug
• 60:1 Step-up
Transformer
• Trigger coil opens the
circuit for the primary
winding
Customer Education
Breaker Point Ignition Systems
• Used on engines
until 1981
• Consisted of
armature, points
and condenser
Customer Education
Breaker Point Ignition Systems
• When points are closed,
magnetic field builds up
in primary winding
• When points open,
magnetic field in
primary winding
collapses thru
secondary winding
• This creates enough
voltage to fire the spark
plug
Customer Education
Breaker Point Ignition Systems
(NOT USED ON THIS ENGINE)
• Note the locations of
the parts
• Usually required
service annually
Customer Education
Magnetron® Ignition Systems
(USED ON THIS ENGINE)
• Electronic module which
replaced points and
condenser
• Module acts like switch
– Opens and closes circuit
on the primary winding
Customer Education
Spark Plug
• Electrical energy will
jump the spark plug
gap
– Spark causes air-fuel
mixture to burn
• Proper spark plug
gap
