DAY 8
water tray??? (~ 3 minutes)
Cover your tray or will dry out at window
Observations (see): color, new features,
growth
Measurements: (mm, cm)
root
stem

AIM: Identify and describe the function of the roots, stem,
leaves and flower of a plant? Explain what is meant by
osmosis, capillary action, transpiration and the water cycle.
OBJ: Given notes and activity sheet SWBAT identify and
describe the parts of a plant and distinguish between
osmosis, capillary action and transpiration with 70%
accuracy
DN: Seed Journal; Complete Water Movement Act Sheet
(Demo);
ACT: Introduction to Plant Parts
Complete Plant Parts Activity Sheet
(Q5: What function does the seed coat serve? )
HW: Complete Plant Parts Activity Sheet; Work on Plants
Activity Sheet, Plant Exam, Oct 17.
WATER MOVEMENT NOTES
Osmosis: fluid movement from high to low
concentration thru a membrane.
Cohesion: water molecule attracted to itself
Capillary action: movement of fluids
upwards thru narrow tubes (opposite to
gravity).
Transpiration: evaporation (liquid→gas)
occurring in plant leaves thru stomata.

TRANSPIRATION
CAPILLARY
ACTION
OSMOSIS
WATER CYCLE NOTES
Evaporation: phase change from liquid→gas
along a surface (e.g., ocean sea level)
Condensation: phase change from gas→liquid
(e.g., cloud formation)
Precipitation: water falling from the sky.
Runoff: water moving along the Earth’s surface
to a large body of water (e.g., sea, ocean).
Water Movement Activity Sheet
I. Day 1: bag white, Day 2: bag purple/black
iodine molecules small, move thru bag’s
membrane into starch turning starch black
II. Droplets come together; water molecule is
attracted to itself
III. Internal tubes dyed red; capillary action
IV. Inside of bag water droplets on surface;
transpiration (liquid water → water vapor
then condenses on inside surface of plastic
bag)
Water Movement Activity Sheet
Water Cycle
A. Evaporation
B. Condensation
C. Precipitation
D. Runoff
Questions
1. Roots by osmosis
2. Capillary action and Cohesion+Adhesion
3. Stomata: pores/opening on leaf
4. Transpiration (liquid → gas)
5. Precipitation
PLANT PARTS AND THEIR FUNCTION
Roots: take in (by osmosis) water, minerals, nutrients
from the soil, anchor plant into soil, stores food.
Stem: transport (move) fluids throughout plant; support for
branches and leaves; xylem (high), phloem (low)
Leaf: site of photosynthesis (make food, autotroph);
chloroplast: photosynthesis organelle;
chlorophyll: green pigment;
stomata: pore/opening in leaf
Flower: site of sexual reproduction
