PLANT GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT By: Lori Mitchell To Know a Plant, Grow a Plant • • • • Plant a seed In the mind and with the hand Use the five senses To engage and understand • • • • To investigate; observe, Measure, analyze, and describe… Harvest a Fast Plant seed And make science come alive M & M Color Code Tell one job-related fact for every red you chose. Tell one family fact for every green you chose. Tell one thing you like to do for every blue you chose. Tell one movie you like to see for every brown you chose. Tell one book you like to read for every yellow you chose. Tell one place to which you would like to travel for every orange you chose. Let’s Take A Walk • • • • • • • • • • • STC Introduction Overview Materials Science Notebooks Science Course of Study Lessons Lesson Duplication Masters. Assessment Learning Cycle Assessment Duplication Masters Resources What Do You Know About Plants? • In your science notebooks make a KWL chart and list the things you know, and want to know about plants. • Write one of the things you know on the leaf provided. OBSERVING LIMA BEANS • Turn to your Table of Contents and add Seed Observations. • Gather materials: 1 dry lima bean, 1 hand lens, activity sheet 1 • Complete the chart by writing one or two descriptive words in each of the first four blocks (Color, shape, texture, and odor) • Make a drawing in the last block. “Size” • Measure it with a centimeter ruler. • Place your bean in the medicine vial filled with water. PREDICTION • Using your science notebook make a predication about what will happen to the beans after soaking overnight. • After my lima bean soaks overnight, I think it will__________ because…. SOAKED BEAN • • • • • Gather materials Complete the chart State your conclusion Did anything surprise you? Is there anything new you would like to learn? • Would all beans do the same thing? What is Inside a Seed • • • • • Gently peel off the seed coat. Pry open the two halves Do you see the embryo and the cotyledon Make sure you are using your handlens. Add “What is Inside a Seed” to your science notebook • Draw and label the parts of a seed. • Compare your drawing to the transparency. Planting the Seeds • • • • • • • • What are a plants basic needs. WATER, LIGHT, NURISHMENT, SPACE How will we provide these for our plants? WATER. (WATER SYSTEM) LIGHT (LIGHT KIT) NURISHMENT (SOIL and FERTILIZER) LET’S PLANT Now let’s read Fast Plants for Fast Times SCIENCE NOTEBOOK • Add: Planting the Seeds to the TABLE OF CONTENTS. • Question: What do plants need to survive? • How will we provide these needs? • On the vocabulary page add: germination THINNING AND TRANSPLANTING • Question: Why must we thin and transplant? • Think about a plant’s basic needs. What needs cannot be met if a plant doesn’t have enough space? • Choose the healthy plants to stay. • Keep one plant per cell. • Loosen the soil around the plants. Remove the plants carefully. Use a handlens to examine your plants. ROOTS Look for the roots and root hairs. Draw your uprooted plant in your science notebook. Write down your answer to the question why must we thin and transplant Did all of the seeds sprout or germinate? COMIC STRIP • Make a comic strip using 2 plants in the same pot or quad as the main characters. • Have one try and convince the other to move out. • Make sure you include in the strip valid reasons for one plant to move out PHOTOSYNTHESIS • Add photosynthesis and germinate to your vocabulary How Does Your Plant Grow Day 5,6,7,or 8 • Select one plant to measure everyday • Put your label next to that plant • Measure your plant in centimeters. • Graph and record your data OBSERVING LEAVES AND FLOWER BUDS DAY 7,8,or 9 • • • • Observe your quad with a hand lens Look closely at the leaves Are they all alike The bottom two are seed leaves. They were the cotyledon while inside the seed • The next are the true leaves • Notice the color, size, shape, and number of buds. • Count the leaves. (Both seed and true) • Now make a scientific drawing of your plant. • Label the parts. • Write a several descriptive sentences about your plant • Look at the life cycle cards. Compare the cards with your plant. PREDICTION • What will happen to your plant next? • Add to vocabulary: seed leaves, true leaves, flower buds.
