The purpose of this presentation is to help you explain Chinook winds
to your students.
Before you do this, make sure that YOU understand them! Go to

NOTE: As I teach about Chinook winds, I do not include any math or
scary words like “adiabatic”, which they will never hear again the rest of
their lives.

• At Browning on Feb. 10, 1988 the
temperature rose from 13 F to 46 F
between 8 am and noon.
• January 11, 1980: Temperature at the
Great Falls Airport rose from -32F to
15F in seven minutes
• At Loma on January 15, 1972 temp.
increased from -54 F to 49 F

• Humid air is forced up west slopes of mountains.
• Clouds form as air cools by expansion.
• Heat released as vapor changes to cloud
crystals (snow).
