What causes a hurricane
• Seawater is at least 80 degrees Fahrenheit
• Air must be warm and humid
• Weak upper winds in same direction of storm
Hurricane characteristics
• Tropical- generated in tropical areas of
ocean
• Cyclonic- winds circle an eye
• Low pressure system- eye has low pressure
• Wind speed- wind > 74 mph
Different categories of hurricanes
•category 1: 74-95mph
•category 2: 96-110mph
•category 3: 111-130mph
•category 4: 131-155mph
•category 5: greater than 155 mph
