One of the endangered species is the kangaroo. That interesting and unique animal is the national symbol of Australia.
Kangaroos have been featured on coins, as well as being used as emblems, logos and mascots. They are well
presented in films, television, books, toys around the world.
First Europeans heard about the kangaroo in 1770 when lieutenant Cook and naturalist Joseph Bank were exploring the
land and saw the animals. According to the legend they asked the natives what the creatures were called, they
responded “ Kangaroo” , meaning “I don’t understand.”, which Cook took to be the name of the creatures.
The kangaroo is a marsupial animal. They have large powerful legs, large feet adapted for leaping, a long muscular tail for
balance and a small head. There are 4 main species: the Red Kangaroo, the Eastern Grey Kangaroo, the Western Grey
Kangaroo, the Antelope Kangaroo and about 50 smaller species. The Red Kangaroo is the largest marsupial. A male
can be 2 metres tall and weighs 90 kg.
Different species have different diets, but they are strict herbivores, grazing eaters of wide variety of grasses.
Few natural predators are great danger for small species. Lack of food encourages dingoes, goannas and other reptiles
attack kangaroos
The kangaroo has been historically a source of food for Australians. They have hunted for their hide and meat, which is
high in protein and low in fat.
Kangaroos live groups called mobs.. A female can give a birth to a baby –a joey at age of 31-36 days When it is born it is
about size of a lima bean. The joey can leave mother’s pouch at age of 9-10 months and is fed by mother until it
reaches 18 months.
Male kangaroos often box among each other, playfully, for dominance, or in competition for a female. The real danger of
their kicking lies in a serous kick with their leg.
Recently Australian authorities have been concerned about kangaroos’ disease. Veterinarians have also discovered that
3% of kangaroos is suffering from blindness.
A great ganger for them is cars. Dazzled by headlights and startled by engine noise they can leap in front of cars. Many
animals have become victims of a car collision. You come across “Kangaroo Crossing” sigh everywhere in Australia.
Some people tried to domesticate the animals, but after hand-rearing in the captivity they can’t live in the wild. In 2004
one of such kangaroos , Lulu, saved a farmer’s life by alerting family members of his location when he was injured by a
falling tree.. She received the RSPCA Australia National Animal Award.
