The Environment Has Structure Science 6 Life in an Environment • What is an environment? – Everything that affects an organism • What is ecology? – The study of the interactions between organisms and their environment. • Biotic Factors: – living parts of the environment such as plants and animals. • Abiotic Factors: – nonliving parts of the environment such as climate, soil type, and air. Biosphere Ecosystem Community Population Organism Organism • Single organism • Anything that can independently carry out life processes • Example: one clownfish Organism Population • A group of individuals of the SAME SPECIES that live together in the same area • Example: all the clownfish living in the same area Population Community • All of the populations of different species that live in the same area • Example: all the clownfish, turtles, other fish, sharks, manta rays, dolphins, seaweed, bacteria… Ecosystem • A community of organisms combined with the nonliving (rocks, dirt) parts of the environment • Example: the ocean Ecosystem Biosphere Biosphere • All of the ecosystems on Earth combined together Ecosystem Community Population Organism
