Rocket Forces By: Jonathon Gardner & Josh Flores Newton’s Laws of Motion • 1st Law – The rocket travels at a constant speed until air resistance and gravity act against it. • 2nd Law – The acceleration of our rocket was based on the mass, air resistance, and shape of the rocket. • 3rd Law – The more pressure inside of the bottle = the further its travel Force • The weight of the rocket creates a gravitational force exerted on the rocket, as well as the air resistance acting on the object which depends on the rocket’s mass. Speed & Velocity Acceleration • The rocket accelerated positively due to the force of air pressure as it was launched, and had a negative acceleration as it came to a stop. Gravity • The rocket is pulled toward the center of the earth by a gravitational force depending on the distance the rocket is to earth’s center and the mass of the rocket. • Gravity causes the rocket to fall towards earth. Air Resistance • The air resistance acts against the rocket in the direction opposite that the rocket travels. • The amount of air resistance on the rocket depends on the size, shape, and speed of the rocket, along the properties of the air.
