Cell Cycle Graphic Organizer For this Activity You will Need: Blue Colored Pencil Red Colored Pencil Green Colored Pencil Lead Pencil Cell Cycle – Big Picture DNA copied DNA is equally divided Cell splits apart Goal of Cell Cycle • Goal: To make 2 identical cells with the SAME number of DNA molecules as the original cell Let’s follow how the DNA moves in this process. You will see that the DNA is moved very carefully to make sure that each cell gets the SAME amount. 1. Interphase • 1. Interphase – Cell Grows – DNA Doubles 2. Mitosis Centrioles • A. Prophase (P=Prepare) – Chromatin coils into duplicated chromosomes – Nucleus disappears – Spindle fibers shoot out from centrioles 2. Mitosis Spindle Fibers Duplicated Chromosomes • B. Metaphase (M=Middle) – Spindle fibers pull duplicated chromosomes to the middle of the cell 2. Mitosis • C. Anaphase (A=Apart) – Duplicated chromosomes split at centromere – Fibers pull chromosomes to opposite ends of cell 2. Mitosis • D. Telophase (T=Tear) – Chromosomes uncoil into chromatin – Nucleus reappears – Spindle fibers disappear 3. Cytokinesis • 3. Cytokinesis – Cytoplasm & organelles divide – Cell splits into two new cells Cell Cycle – Revisit the Big Picture • THINK! – What happens in each stage? 1. DNA is copied 2. DNA is equally divided 3. Cell splits apart into 2 separate cells • • VIDEO Visualizing Mitosis – – Mitosis – Hybrid Medical Animation (Better Quality-streams from Website) Mitosis - Hybrid Medical Animation – Mitosis courtesy of Protein Lounge Animations – Mitosis to Music - http://wormclassroom.org/files/worm/CellDivision.swf – Animal Cell Mitosis in Real Time – Breast Cancer Cells Dividing – Glencoe Mitosis Animation Websites – Mitosis with Music- http://www.loci.wisc.edu/outreach/bioclips/CDBio.html – Brain-Pop Clip (Mitosis)http://glencoe.mcgrawhill.com/sites/007877800x/student_view0/brainpop_movies.html – Cells Alive - http://www.cellsalive.com/mitosis.htm – Biology Corner http://www.biologycorner.com/bio1/cellcycle.html
