Kingdom Bacteria Bacteria are simple prokaryotic single celled organisms that are found either as individuals, in colonies (groups of cells together) or in chains (cells attached end to end). Generally they are any where from 1 - 5 micrometers in size. They are classified according to the shape of the individual cell Reproduction • Bacterial cells reproduce by means of asexual reproduction also known as binary fission. • In this process one cell divides into two daughter cells that have the identical genetic material. Bacteria can not reproduce by mitosis or meiosis because they do not contain a nucleus. The genetic material is contained within a single chromosome strand. As the cell develops it makes a copy of its original chromosome. When the cell reaches a certain size it elongates and the copied chromosome moves to the opposite side of the cell. A partition builds between the two strands Eventually the original cell splits into two new daughter cells. • • • • • • • HOW PLANTS AND ANIMALS DIFFER Plants and animals are both kingdoms of living things. They differ in important aspects. The chart below summarizes some of these differences. PLANTS ANIMALSPlants generally are rooted in one place an do not move on their ownMost animals have the ability to move fairly freely.Plants contain chlorophyl and can make their own food Animals cannot make their own food and are dependent on plants and other animals for food. Plants give off oxygen and take in carbon dioxide given off by animals. Animals give off carbon dioxide which plants need to make food and take in oxygen which they need to breathe.Plants cells have cell walls and other structures differ from those of animals. Animal cells do not have cell walls and have different structures than plant cellsPlants have either no or very basic ability to sense.Animals have a much more highly develped sensory and nervous system.
